Teen Tuesdays Are Canceled

I’m sorry to announce that there will no longer be official Teen Tuesdays. Attendance was too low to justify my time and the cost of the snacks. Teens are of course always welcome to hang out in the library to read or discuss books, so don’t forget we are open late Tuesdays and Fridays.

If you have any questions about the cancellation, upcoming programs, or want help finding something good to read please contact me svollick@orl.bc.ca.

Arthurian Night

sword in the stone display Jan 4th is Teen Tuesday, which means we get to talk about books and enjoy some snacks (provided by Askews) in the teen room.

King Arthur legends can be found in every area of the library, with history, with poetry, with fantasy and yes in YA lit!

The great thing about King Arthur night at the library is that you can connect it to what you like to read.

If you like high fantasy set in other worlds there are versions of King Arthur like Guy Gavriel Kay’s The Summer Tree where King Arthur is reincarnated the magical world Fionavar or where Merlin is a powerful wizard.

If you like historical fiction there are more realistic takes on Arthurian legend. For example Jack Whyte’s Dream of Eagles series. This has mature subject matter and isn’t considered YA but I know teens who have enjoyed it.

If you like chit lit or romance you might prefer the  Avalon High graphic novels or the Mists of Avalon.

King Arthur stories have the potential to have

  • action
  • adventure
  • romance (Arthur, Guenevere and Lancelot love triangle)
  • magic
  • politics

If you read anything relating to King Arthur, his knights, Excalibur or Merlin you will be able to join to in the discussion on Jan 4th.  Here are some examples of Arthurian titles at the library

Reminder: September is Angel Month

once dead, twice shySeptember 7th we will gather around the angel food cake and talk about teen novels that involve angels. We can discuss any books that fall within this theme, including graphic novels.

The two angel themed books I’ve read in preparation for the book discussion are Hush, Hush and Once Dead, Twice Shy. Both of these titles are in our library system.

I would recommend Once Dead, Twice Shy if you want a different perspective on angels, a debate between free will and fate, and likable characters.

What angel books have you loved? (comment below and or come September 7th)

Vampire Month is Over, On To The Angels

vampcakes

yummy cupcakes I baked for you.

Unfortunately we only had a couple of people at the first Teen Tuesday. This meant the cupcakes, strawberries and juice (all red and vampalicious) were mostly consumed by the SRC kids the next day.

If you want to send me an e-mail to let me know what you’ve thought of some vampire books you read, or share a review that’s awesome.

vampire snack

Aug 3rd

Next month is angels, so I am currently reading Hush Hush and thinking up some fun angel stuff to talk about on September 7th. Askew’s has kindly provided the groceries for snacks for September as well, which means I will be whipping up some angel themed snacks.

I have already mentioned some popular angel fiction, but if you are looking for more ideas let me know!

Copyright Blues

I’m sorry to announce that due to copyright issues the SA branch will not be able to include movies as part of Teen Tuesdays. Sorry to disappoint, please forgive previous advertising including movies.

We will still be having book discussion and free snacks provided by Askew’s.  It will be a great time and you will hear about some good reads, so try to finish a vampire book by August 3rd.

Reading Ahead?

cover art for hush hushSeptember’s Teen Tuesday theme is Angels, and there are some waiting lists for the popular books on the topic.

There are 22 holds on Fallen by Lauren Kate! I confess I am one of those holds because it’s my choice for the angel book chat. Hush, Hush by Becca Fitzbatrick isn’t far behind at 17 holds, that one’s been on my to-read list for a long time.

Theres a slightly shorter waiting list for The Fallen, part 1 by Tom Sniegoski but the library only has one copy.

Of course you can probably get Eternal by Cynthia Leitich Smith, which also looks good.

With all these waiting lists you might want to put a hold on your Angel book so you have something to discuss September 7th!

Vampires

Sparkle, Spike, stake or spar? Whatever type of vampire novels you enjoy or have not yet had a chance to try, read one and come for a discussion.

Great way to hear about what others have enjoyed or hated so you know what to look for or avoid.
